Anaesthesia

Hehehe.. another entry draught for weeks.. eh, this time not too long laa, coz there’s a constant request to hapdet my blog *grrrr nak kena tau orang tu!*

Im doing Anaesthesia at the moment. Should be hanging out in the surgical theatre, socializing with the anaesthetist (umm.. based on the theatre number, might be a urology or ENT surgeries.), but my partner caught a flu (NO it isn’t swine flu) so I thought I’ll share her misery and not turning up as well, hehe~. Not trying to be a slack, but im trying to sort my elective out. To apply for this one particular hosp in North Island, which requires me to do paperworksSSSS. I got 4 done, need one more but Im having a brain block at the mo thus marilah kite melagha =p

Anaesthesia is quite fun and laid back actually. It involves;
1) Puts an IV line, reassure them that we’re there to ‘sort him out’ with our capable hands *cough cough*. They do need such reassurance or otherwise they’ll get all nervous & twitchy, resulting in sucking more drugs compared from what a normal-relaxed patient requires. Of course, also subtly explains the possible complications/risks to help protect our a** so that they wont sue the hospital if something nasty (God forbid) happened.
2) Bids the patient good nite, injects drugs aka ticket to their lala land. Patient go to sleep.
3) Intubate - the best part! (puts a tube down the throat to assist their breathing. Tries not to break patient’s teeth to further avoid paying for their dental work, eheh~. No casualty caused by me so far, thankfully =p )
4) By now there will be wires connecting everywhere from patient’s part to the monitoring machines. Thus check every now and then and be aware of any beeping sounds from the machines – which means something is wrong, patient needs more drugs etc..
5) And the socializing between us begins!
6) Talks about Malaysia and the anaesthetist’s experiences in Msia or surrounding neighbours..
7) Talks about where I’m going for electives and why I cant go outside NZ *frown and shaking heads*..
8) Talks about why he specialized in anaesthesia (surprisingly the seniors are all males! There are only a few junior females, but haven’t encounter them just yet)
9) Talks about….. whatever else lah.
10) Whooopsss.. have I forgot to mention about physiology and pharmacology (med stuff that we learned back in 2nd and 3rd year, that I thought will never be useful again -_-“) Yea polishing my rusty brain. Of course, of course, this is the most important bit in anaesthesia rather than point number 5-9. ehehehehe....
11) Okay when the surgery’s done, wake the patient up and suck their saliva out. And congratulate them for doing well during the surgery (by… umm.. sleeping soundly? =p ). Yes.. It IS very important that they stay asleep throughout, or otherwise they could feel all the pain of cutting and prodding done by the surgeons (but as they’re paralyzed, they cant scream in pain! Ouchhhh. fikir je oun dah rasa ngilu)

Thats it! Anaesthesia is easy peasy?? =p
well i guess it is in a perfect situation. But there are times when the anaesthetist doesnt hav time to talk to me at all coz the patient's situation keeps declining, and he is the key person tht keeps the patient stable. Pendek kata, mencabarlah field nih! Should i consider becoming a pakar bius then?? =p That also means polishing my physiology and pharmacology skills. --"

Hehe sorry this entry is a tad boring. I just thought putting some med-stuff would be great to give a sniff of what im going thru in med school. Its' not all rainbows and butterflies as exaggeratedly pictured in Grey's Anatomy or Scrubs. But still good stuff that makes u ponder about life! =)
